I just published a recipe for Upside Down Apple Cake on one of my blogs even though it’s most definitely not apple season.
Because, I mean, it’s pretty easy to get good apples all year long, so perhaps all year is apple season? This made me wonder why apples are available year-round, so I did a little googling and here’s what I found: After apples are harvested they are stored in controlled atmosphere storage which lowers the oxygen in the room to about 1.5 to 2.5 percent and adjusts the carbon dioxide, essentially putting the apples to sleep.
Perhaps many of you already knew this, but it was news to me.
It made me thing about other “seasonal” ingredients that aren’t really seasonal any more. Is there a seasonal ingredient that you use all year round?

Lemons and limes! They are a winter fruit but grow year round where I live. Plus, I love them!
Strawberries seem to be available year-round in the Bay Area. Hothouses, I guess.
